This unique floating hotel drifts 300 metres off the coast of Pemba Island in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, part of the Manta Resort complex in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The second underwater project by Swedish designer Mikael Genberg, this room is split between the surface and the sea, with the sleeping area four metres under the water and the shower and relaxation area above it, accessible via a deck made from local hardwood. At night, the exterior of the bedroom is lit to attract the residents of the sea to the windows. Finally, a staircase gives access to the roof of the hotel, where guests can sunbathe during the day and stargaze at night.

When designing the SeaScape villas, BMT Group Asia Pacific focused on making the project live up to its name – providing unbeatable views of the surrounding ocean from a cylinder of acrylic glass. Floating on triangular pontoons, the villas extend 3 metres underwater, with a living area, bathroom and bedroom arranged around a spiral staircase to offer a 360-degree view of the underwater neighbourhood. The villas can be towed to shore and used as a normal house, and they are easily extendable from the standard 65 square metres to up to 170 metres.

Ventilated by the breeze and insulated by the sea, the villas are also impressive ecologically – alternative energy sources mean they can operate either as standalone capsules or as part of a larger complex. Moreover, while they come as standard with the kind of utilities you would find on a yacht, the SeaScape villas can also be fitted with solar panels or a small generator.
A winner at the Millennium Yacht Design Awards, this floating hotel from Serbian studio Salt&Water is a completely mobile invention designed to develop tourism on rivers and lakes. It is divided into two components, each with a different function – one part is the relaxation area, with a hotel, restaurant, staff quarters, café and conference hall, and the second is a docking station for 'catamaran-rooms'. Sleeping 4 each, the catamarans contain a bedroom, bathroom, hallway and storage area, with a private terrace outside for fishing, swimming or simply admiring the view.
Retno guru kelas lima sekolah dasar ini terus menggendong anaknya Fakhri Munif Assahri yang masih berusia tiga setengah tahun didepan murid-muridnya.

Aktivitas ini selalu dijalani ibu single parent ini sejak satu bulan
lalu setelah nenek Fakhri sering sakit-sakitan. Retno yang hanya tinggal
bersama ibunya terpaksa berjuang merawat anaknya sendiri sehingga
sampai Fahri harus dibawa ke sekolah .
Menurut Retno,
(2/10) Fakhri anaknya, mengalami radang otak hingga mengalami lumpuh
layu sejak usia enam bulan. Retno mengaku sudah empat kali membawa
anaknya ke rumah sakit, namun belum ada perkembangan dialami anaknya.

hidupnya selain mengajar, Retno juga mengajar les privat dirumahnya.

Sementara
itu Kadinas Kesehatan dr. Juhari Angkasa mengatakan pihaknya akan

bantu pengobatan Fakhri melalui program Jamkesda sampai sembuh,” ujar Juhari

This river is called Rio Negro (Black River) due to water color. Rio Negro is the largest left tributary of the Amazon, the largest blackwater river in the world. While the name Rio Negro means Black River, its waters aren't exactly black; they are similar in color to strong tea. The dark color comes from humic acid from incomplete breakdown of phenol. I photographed it from the water and my lens got completely wet, but there was so energy in this boys that I just didn't worry about that.
Lance Corporal Myles Kerr may have lost the Jeff Drench Memorial 5K footrace in Charlevoix, Michigan last weekend, but he's won the hearts of hundreds of thousands.

VIDEO: Marines Won't Leave Ailing Recruit Behind

On Saturday, the 19-year-old Marine noticed 9-year-old Brandon Fuchs struggling to complete the race. The boy had become separated from his group. According to the Facebook page, Seal of Honor, which posted a photograph of the pair running together, Fuchs asked Kerr, "Sir, will you please run with me?" Kerr, wearing boots, fatigues, and carrying a full backpack, stuck with the boy and encouraged him to complete the race and helped him reunite with his party at the end of the course-even though Kerr was dead last in his age group, clocking in at 35:43 minutes (five seconds behind Fuchs). He came in so much later than his Marine buddies, in fact, that they were concerned he had been injured.

The photo has received over 200,000 likes and nearly 10 thousand shares.

The Seal of Honor page, which was established in the memory of Lieutnant Michael Murphy who served as a Navy Seal in Afghanistan, went on to praise the young man, "By his unwavering commitment to help those in need through his ability to inspire others by his unequivocal level of motivation, Lcpl Kerr reflected great credit upon himself and was keeping in the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps."

More on Yahoo!: Ohio Runner Stops In State Final to Aid Fallen OpponentFor his part, Kerr took the all credit and admiration in stride. On Wednesday, he tweeted:

He also thanked Fuch's family for giving him a $100 dollar gift card to the Grey Gables restaurant in Charlevoix.
Clarke

It’s probably the most overused quote in tech writing… which sucks, because I’d really like to use it to describe how I feel about the Chromecast.

The Chromecast is deceptively simple: you plug it into your TV, then stream video and music to it from apps running on your iPhone, Android device, or laptop. The Chromecast itself has no remote; whatever device you’re streaming from is the remote. The Chromecast has next to no user interface of its own, either; it’s got a single screen that shows the time and whether or not it’s connected to your WiFi that appears when nothing is being streamed, but again, the device you’re streaming from largely acts as the interface. The Chromecast is a wireless portal to your TV, and doesn’t try to be anything more.

A Box Full Of Surprises

I’ve been thinking about it all night, and I don’t think I’ve ever been as surprised by a device as I am by the Chromecast.

The price? Surprise! It’s $35. Are you kidding me? According to Google, they’re not selling them at a loss. Even after accounting for the Wi-Fi chip, the CPU, 2GB of flash memory, the RAM, licensing the right to use HDMI, assembly, packaging, and shipping them to the states, they’re somehow making money selling these things for thirty five dollars. Sure, their profit margin is probably like, four cents — but that they’re not selling these at a loss at that price point is kind of absurd.

The setup? Surprise! It’s ridiculously easy. Plug it into HDMI, give it some juice (through USB, which most new TVs have, or a standard wallwart), then run the Chromecast app on a laptop to tell it what Wi-Fi network to connect to. Done.

App compatibility? Surprise! It’s already there on day one in some of the most notable online video apps, including Netflix and YouTube. I didn’t even have to update the apps — I just launched ‘em on my phone and the Chromecast button was sitting there waiting for me. They’ve even already built an extension for Chrome that drastically expands the functionality of the device (though, in its beta state, it’s a bit buggy — more on that later).

Hell, even the very announcement of the Chromecast was a bit of a surprise. Google somehow managed to keep the Chromecast a secret until right before its intended debut, even with a bunch of outside parties involved. Netflix, Pandora, teams from all over Google, everyone involved in the manufacturing process — all of them were in the loop, yet nothing leaked until someone accidentally published a support page a few hours too early.

Now, none of that is to suggest that the Chromecast is perfect. It’s not! Not yet, at least. But its biggest issues are quite fixable, assuming that Google doesn’t look at the “overwhelming” sales of the Chromecast and say ‘Oh, well, screw this thing.’ And for just $35, the few blemishes it has are pretty easy to overlook.

Taking The Bad With The Good:

Video streaming quality is quite good (on par with what I get on my Xbox 360 or my Apple TV, at least) particularly when pulling from an app or website that’s been tailored for compatibility — so Netflix, Youtube, or Google Play, at the moment.

If you’re using the Chromecast extension for Chrome on your laptop to project an otherwise incompatible video site (like Hulu or HBOGO), however, video quality can dump quite a bit depending on your setup. It’s using your laptop as a middle man to encode the video signal and broadcast it to the Chromecast, whereas the aforementioned compatible sites just send video straight to the dongle, mostly removing your laptop from the mix. When casting video tabs on a 2012 MacBook Air running on an 802.11n network, the framerate was noticeably lower and there were occasional audio syncing issues.

While we’re on the topic, the Chrome extension packs a bit of an easter egg: the ability to stream local videos from your laptop to the Chromecast. Just drag a video into Chrome, and it’ll start playing in a new tab. Use the Chrome extension to cast that tab, and ta da! You’re streaming your (totally legitimate, not-at-all-pirated-am-i-right) videos without bringing any other software into the mix. I tried it with a bunch of video formats (AVIs, MOVs, MKVs), and they all seemed to work quite well, albeit with the lowered framerate I mentioned earlier.

Even within the apps that have already been tweaked for Chromecast compatibility, there are some day one bugs. Sometimes videos don’t play the first time you ask them to, instead dropping you into a never-ending loading screen. Other times, the video’s audio will start playing on top of a black screen. These bugs aren’t painfully common, but they’re not rare, either.

Fortunately, it’s mostly all good — and it can only get better

Even with a bug or two rearing its head, the Chromecast is easily worth its $35 price tag.

Remember, this thing just launched, and it came mostly out of nowhere. Those bugs? They’ll get patched away. The sometimes-iffy framerate on projected tabs? It’ll almost certainly get better, as the Chromecast extension comes out of beta.

Pitted against the AppleTV — or, in a fairer comparison, against the AppleTV’s built-in AirPlay streaming feature — the Chromecast’s biggest strength is in its cross-platform compatibility. Whereas AirPlay is limited to iOS devices and Macs (with limited support for Windows through iTunes), Chromecast will play friendly with any iOS, Android, Mac, or Windows app that integrates Googles Cast SDK. Having just launched, the Cast protocol obviously isn’t nearly as ubiquitous as AirPlay, either in terms of Apps that support it or in terms of other devices (like wireless speakers) that utilize it — but assuming that developers embrace the format (and really, they should), both of those things could quickly change. If developers support the protocol, Google could quite feasibly open it up to third parties to be integrated directly into TVs, speakers, and other types of gadgets. If that happens, AirPlay could be in trouble.

On the topic of its cross-platform compatibility: the experience on Android is a slightly better than it is on iOS, as Google has considerably more freedom on the platform; for example, apps that use Chromecast can take priority over the lockscreen, allowing the user to play/pause/skip a video without having to fully unlock their Android device. That’s just icing on the cake, though; for the most part, all of the primary features work just as well on iOS as they do on Android.

Conclusion

It’s one of the easiest recommendations I’ve ever made: If the Chromecast sounds like something you’d want, buy it. It’s easily worth $35 as it stands, and it’s bound to only get better as time goes on, the bugs get ironed out, and more apps come to support it.

[Disclosure: Google loaned me this Chomecast for me to tinker with, but it goes back as soon as my review is done. With that said, I liked it enough that I've already ordered one of my own.
Police
will today question the driver of a train that derailed in Spain,
killing at least 80 people, in one of Europe's worst rail disasters.

The driver, named by local media as 52-year-old Francisco Jose Garzon,
has remained under police guard in hospital since the crash on Wednesday
night.

The eight-carriage train came off the tracks on a bend,
hit a wall and caught fire just outside the pilgrimage destination
Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain.

It has emerged the train may have been travelling at more than twice the speed limit at the time of the crash.

The train entered the bend at 190 km per hour (120 mph), according to local media reports.

The speed limit on the curve was 80km per hour (50 mph).

Witnesses are reported to have heard Mr Garzon shout into a phone: "I've derailed! What do I do?"

A judge in Santiago de Compostela, capital of the region of Galicia, ordered police to take a statement from the driver.

It was not clear what kind of injuries Mr Garzon - who helped to rescue victims - had suffered.

He was being formally investigated and under police guard but he has not been arrested, the regional supreme court said.

Earlier reports said there was a second driver on the train, but it is believed Mr Garzon was the sole driver.

State train company Renfe said Mr Garzon had been at the firm for 30
years and he had been driving trains for more than a decade.

Meanwhile, medical experts will continue trying to identify 13 of the
victims as distraught families continue to wait for news about their
loved ones.

The victims of the crash included a US citizen and a
Mexican. At least one British citizen and four children were among the
94 people injured.

Video footage from a security camera showed
the train, which had 247 people on board, hurtling into a concrete wall
at the side of the track.

The impact was so huge one carriage flew several metres into the air and landed on the other side of a concrete barrier.

The Alvia 730 series train was travelling from Madrid to the port city
of Ferrol when it crashed about 8.40pm local time - 7.40pm UK time - on
Wednesday.

The crash occurred on the eve of a major Christian
religious festival honouring St James, the disciple of Jesus whose
remains are said to rest in a shrine.

Many of the dead or injured were believed to be Catholic pilgrims converging on the city.
(AP) — Across the West, early miners digging for gold, silver and copper had no idea that one day something else very valuable would be buried in the piles of dirt and rocks they tossed aside.

There's a rush in the U.S. to find key components of cellphones, televisions, weapons systems, wind turbines, MRI machines and the regenerative brakes in hybrid cars, and old mine tailings piles just might be the answer. They may contain a group of versatile minerals the periodic table called rare earth elements.

"Uncle Sam could be sitting on a gold mine," said Larry Meinert, director of the mineral resource program for the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va.

The USGS and Department of Energy are on a nationwide scramble for deposits of the elements that make magnets lighter, bring balanced hues to fluorescent lighting and color to the touch screens of smartphones in order to break the Chinese stranglehold on those supplies.

They were surprised to find that the critical elements could be in plain sight in piles of rubble otherwise considered eyesores and toxic waste. One era's junk could turn out to be this era's treasure.

"Those were almost never analyzed for anything other than what they were mining for," Meinert said. "If they turn out to be valuable that is a win-win on several fronts — getting us off our dependence on China and having a resource we didn't know about."

The 15 rare earth elements were discovered long after the gold rush began to wane, but demand for them only took off over the past 10 years as electronics became smaller and more sophisticated. They begin with number 57 Lanthanum and end with 71 Lutetium, a group of metallic chemical elements that are not rare as much as they are just difficult to mine because they occur in tiny amounts and are often stuck to each other.

Unlike metals higher up on the table such as silver and gold, there's no good agent for dissolving elements so closely linked in atomic structure without destroying the target. It makes mining for them tedious and expensive.

"The reason they haven't been explored for in the U.S. was because as long as China was prepared to export enough rare earths to fill the demand, everything was fine — like with the oil cartels. When China began to use them as a political tool, people began to see the vulnerability to the U.S. economy to having one source of rare earth elements," said Ian Ridley, director of the USGS Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center in Colorado.

Two years ago, China raised prices — in the case of Neodymium, used to make Prius electric motors stronger and lighter, from $15 a kilogram in 2009 to $500 in 2011, while Dysprosium oxide used in lasers and halide lamps went from $114 a kilogram in 2010 to $2,830 in 2011. It's also about the time China cut off supplies to Japan, maker of the Prius, in a dispute over international fishing territory.

That's when the U.S. government went into emergency mode and sent geologists to hunt for new domestic sources.

"What we have is a clash of supply and demand. It's a global problem. A growing middle class around the world means more and more people want things like cellphones," said Alex King, director of the Critical Materials Institute of the Department of Energy's Ames Research Lab in Iowa. "Our job is to solve the problem any way we can."

At the University of Nevada-Reno and the Colorado School of Mines, USGS scientists used lasers to examine extensive samples of rocks and ore collected across the West during the gold rush days by geologists from Stanford University and Cal Tech.

"If we could recycle some of this waste and get something out of it that was waste years ago that isn't waste today, that certainly is a goal," said Alan Koenig, the USGS scientist in charge of the tailings project.

One sample collected in 1870 from an area near Sparks, Nev., where miners had searched for a viable copper vein, has shown promise and has given researchers clues in the search for more. They have found that some rare earths exist with minerals they had not previously known occur together.

"The copper mine never went into production, but now after all of this time we've analyzed it and it came back high with Indium, which is used in photovoltaic panels. It never economically produced copper, but it gives us insight into some associations we didn't previously recognize," Koenig said.

Indium also has been found in the defunct copper mine that dominates the artsy southern Arizona town of Bisbee.

Koenig and his colleagues are working to understand the composition of all of the nation's major deposits sampled over the past 150 years. In some cases, the mines were depleted of gold or copper, but the rocks left piled alongside mines and pits could hold a modern mother lode.

"We're revisiting history," he said.

They are compiling data from 2,500 samples to better understand whether it's possible to predict where rare earths might be hiding based on the presence of other elements there, too.

"If I had to venture a number, I'd say we have found several dozen new locations that are elevated in one or more critical metals," Koenig said. "With this project the goal would be to have this large data base available that would allow us to predict and to form new associations."

Currently there is only one U.S. mine producing rare earths— at Mountain Pass in the Southern California desert. Molycorp Inc.'s goal in reopening the defunct mine is 20,000 metric tons of rare earth elements by this summer, including cerium oxide used to polish telescope lenses and other glass.

The USGS is counting on companies like Molycorp to use the information they've gleaned to uncover other easy-to-reach deposits sitting on federal land and elsewhere.

"Without rare earths we'd be back to having black-and-white cellphones again," said the USGS's Ridley.
Job Listing Suggests Motorola Mobility Is Starting To Focus On Wearable Tech In Earnest

Heads up, wearable tech aficionados: Motorola Mobility is looking to produce some new wearable gadgets and it wants some help. The Google-owned company quietly posted a job listing yesterday looking for someone to fill the role of senior director of industrial design for wearables — according to the post, that person will “provide strategic leadership, champion innovation and institute best practices to create a new world-class wearable’s [sic] design group within Motorola.”

At first glance, it seems like the sort of person the more business-centric Motorola Solutions would be looking for — after all, they’ve got plenty of experience in wearable computing as it is — but references in the listing to the company’s “future with Google” make it clear this isn’t just an instance of a post going up on the wrong career site. Then again, Motorola Mobility was responsible for devices like the ill-fated MOTOACTV (seen above), so they’re not exactly strangers to wearable tech either.

Of course, there’s very big question we need to address here: what exactly does Motorola mean when they use the word “wearables”? At this point it’s tough to say, but Regina Dugan, head of MM’s Advanced Technology and Research Group, gave us a bit of a hint when she took at the stage at AllThingsD’s D11 conference. At the time noted that she was “profoundly interested in wearables, and showed off an electronic authentication “tattoo” developed by MC10 — essentially an ultra-thin patch loaded up with very small antennas and sensors — that Motorola would be helping to advance in conjunction with the company.

That sounds pretty niche to be honest, but it may just be the tip of the iceberg if the language in the job listing is any indication. There are repeated references to the importance of consumer appeal: the person who lands the gig must “define design strategies that synthesize technology innovation and consumer desires” and “ensure creative direction for design is consumer focused”, which make it look like Motorola eventually wants to release a wearable device that’s meant for the masses. That jibes rather nicely with remarks made by Motorola consumer experience design SVP Jim Wicks last month at TechWeek in Chicago — he suggested in his keynote address that people won’t be hunched over their gadgets in the future, and that wearable tech will continue pick up steam.

Motorola definitely isn’t the only one tackling the wearable tech trend, as parent company Google has reportedly been working on a smartwatch for a while now, and Apple has reportedly been fleshing out its staff with health and sensor experts who may be working on fitness-friendly wrist-worn gadget.

This isn’t the first time that Motorola let an upcoming initiative slip thanks to a publicly available job posting — earlier this year the Google-owned company was caught trying to hire a senior director of product management for the “X-Phone”, a device we know now to be the Moto X. To absolutely no one’s surprise, that job listing disappeared shortly after it started getting media attention, but the proverbial damage was already done.

As it happens, Motorola is still looking for quite a few people — there are some 450 job openings listed on the Motorola Mobility careers page. Google revealed yesterday in its quarterly earnings release that between March and June of this year, Motorola Mobility lost more than half of its nearly 10,000 person workforce — some certainly moved on of their own volition, but the rest likely were given the boot to help streamline the company staunch the operational losses it’s reported regularly ever since Google acquired it last year.

UPDATE: Motorola has responded to say that the “vast majority” of those people worked in manufacturing in China and Brazil, and have been transferred to Flextronics.
Keringat Mencerahkan Kulit Adriana Lima

"Anak-anak saya tentu saja membuat saya selalu sehat. Saya sibuk sepanjang hari...Saya mencoba untuk olahraga sebisa saya mungkin. Meski jika itu hanya 10 menit."

"Jika Anda menekankan pada berjalan, jongkok atau lompat tali, itu lebih baik dari pada tidak sama sekali. Dan saya terkadang meluangkan waktu untuk ikut kelas," kata Lima menerangkan.

The accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker confirmed that a woman died while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster but did not specify how she was killed. However, witnesses told local media outlets that the woman fell.

"She goes up like this. Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled," said Carmen Brown of Arlington. Brown said she was waiting in line to get on the ride when the accident happened.

Six Flags expressed sadness over the death and said it was temporarily closing the section of the park around the accident site. It didn't say how long the area would be closed. A message left for Parker by The Associated Press was not returned.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time," the park's statement said.

The Texas Giant reaches 14 stories high and has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank of 95 degrees. It can carry up to 24 riders. The ride first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster but underwent a $10 million renovation in 2010 to install steel-hybrid rails before reopening in 2011.

Brown said she was next in line behind the woman and saw her being strapped into her seat next to her son.

"We heard her screaming. We were like, 'Did she just fall?'" Brown said.

Arlington police Sgt. Christopher Cook, the department spokesman, referred all questions to Parker. No other details were available.
In another amusement park accident Friday, a boat on an Ohio thrill ride accidentally rolled backward down a hill and flipped over in water when the ride malfunctioned, injuring all seven people on it. Operators stopped the Shoot the Rapids water ride after the accident, which occurred on the ride's first hill, the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, said.

In 1999, a 28-year-old Arkansas woman drowned and 10 other passengers were injured when a raft-like boat on the Roaring Rapids ride at Six Flags overturned in 2 to 3 feet of water about 200 feet from the end of the ride.

Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961 as the first amusement park in the Six Flags system. It is 17 miles west of downtown Dallas.

Andrew Garfield, who plays the web-slinging superhero in "The Amazing Spider-Man" and its forthcoming sequel, was nowhere in sight. The actor only joined the panel once Spidey left.

Spider-Man told the crowd of nearly 6,000 fans that he loves Comic-Con, adding, "It's the only place where I feel normal."

Garfield, along with Jamie Foxx, director Marc Webb and the film's producers, offered convention-goers the first look at footage from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," which is set for release next year.

Fans were introduced to Foxx's villainous turn as Electro — a man who starts out admiring Spider-Man, but eventually seeks to destroy him.
When we perceive we can't do something, we essentially affirm that perception regardless of ability or skill. In other words, perception can have little to do with reality, although it eventually constructs a reality of its own.

The good news, however, is that negative, unproductive and unhealthy perceptions can be changed through the careful, methodical "adjustment" of behavior. The two are linked into a never-ending cycle; perception influences behavior and behavior influences perception. Want to change one? Simple; just work on the other.

Changed Behavior Changing Perception

A middle school coach once shared with me how he taught a student to remain in his seat when students were working on assignments.

This boy was in constant motion. He would, on occasion, come completely out of his seat. The coach had an idea.

"I'll bet I can convince you that you can stay in your seat for ten minutes with no problem, at all."

The boy didn't think such a thing was possible. Staying in his seat had always been difficult for him at school, at home, at church and everywhere.

The coach smiled and left. In a moment he was back with a jump rope and a timer. He folded the jump rope a couple of times and placed it across the boy's knees.

"In a moment, I'm going to set this timer for ten minutes," he said. "All you have to do is keep the jump rope in your lap, without touching it with your hands, until the timer goes off."

When the timer went off, no one was more surprised than the young man to see the jump rope still placed across his lap. He grinned at the coach, handed him the jump rope, and reset the timer for ten more minutes. When the timer went off for the second time, the boy was still in his seat.

Changed Perception Changing Behavior

Once the boy was convinced he could remain in his seat, he became certain he could repeat the challenge, even without the jump rope.

Have you ever thought you couldn't do something, only to watch another person do it, perhaps a person of less skill or ability than yourself? Did it ever cause you to think, "Well, if he can do it, I know I can?" That's behavioral change that grew from a changed perception. It's a powerful component of learning.

Why was the Coach's "Experiment" Successful?

This is a question I ask when I share this story during teacher training. It brings some interesting responses, but two reasons stand above the others:

1. The instruction was simple and doable. The coach designated ten minutes, not two hours. Also, he instructed the boy to simply keep the jump rope on his lap. He didn't bog the youngster down with multiple directions on how to do it ("Keep your feet on the floor;" "Keep your back straight and your hands on the desk;" "Don't rock back in your chair;" "Just concentrate;" "Don't look around the room").

2. There was a focal point that gave the boy ongoing feedback. He could watch the timer and know precisely where he was in the challenge.

Another Reason?

Some folks suggest there was another reason why this experiment was successful: the attention, positive belief and affirmation of the coach. It certainly didn't hurt. In terms of a long-term skill, the success with the jump rope was probably the most important, most useful and most remembered lesson he taught that student.

Closer to Home

Okay, this example involved a coach, but a parent can do exactly the same thing. In fact, every day parents demonstrate to doubting children what they can accomplish.

My first bicycle was a full-size, three-speed English racer; no training wheels. Even with my father walking behind me holding onto the back of the seat, I felt overwhelmed. Knowing he was there with me helped me practice my balance.

When Dad thought I was close to being able to handle the bike, he took me out in the street where there was a slight down grade. I got some speed going, and felt pretty good about it, especially knowing my father was right there behind me.

Only he wasn't. When I got to the end of the street and looked for my father, he was half a block behind me, grinning. He had "proven" to me I could handle the bike just fine. From that day on, that bike was my magic carpet over my small part of the world.

Is There a Life Lesson Here?

If you look back over this little scenario, you'll note the boy did not remain in his seat for ten minutes; he remained in his seat for 20 minutes; his choice! More importantly, he knew he could do the same anywhere and anytime for the rest of his life. ###

A nationally recognized child and adolescent psychologist and speaker, Dr. James Sutton is the author of The Changing Behavior Book: A Fresh Approach to the Difficult Child. Setting up a business is not easy because you need to consider many things in order to be successful. Without one of them, your business will not be able to go on top or be on the list of top ranking companies nationwide. If you are a beginner in business, take time to read and understand the following things and have them as possible:

1. People. Yes. You actually need manpower as your assistant in setting up your business. For instance, you are planning to have an inflatable water slide party rental business, you need to hire a minimum amount of persons to serve as your staffs or personnel during rentals. The number would depend on your budget.

2. Capital. This is the most important factor for the beginners. You cannot hire or set up a business without cash on hand. If you want a rental business as our previous example, you must have a budget to buy those things or equipment as well as an extra money just in case of emergency. The capital again depends on your chosen materials.

3. Venue. As a beginner, you need to look for the best place for your business. Go to the best establishments and inquire for the vacancy. You should set up your business on the most populated places for popularity.

4. Marketing Strategies. One of the most common types of introducing your products is through mobile marketing. You can use this in the meantime because of its low cost. You just only need a mobile phone to create a message. This should have information about your business opening, freebies, and products offered. Send it to your friends and let the message spread. You can also create posters and printed materials.

5. Business coach. This is actually optional but for the beginners, you need this. A business coach serves as your mentor or a counselor for your decisions and actions. Mentors will help you towards achieving your goal because they are trained to develop your independence, resourcefulness, reliable, knowledge and confidence In addition to these things, they will help you time management while learning your goals and potential problems and solutions.

6. Back up budgets. This is a crucial factor because business beginners are actually having less income in the meantime but if you have back up budgets for compensation, you will continue your business.

Hardships are just present at the beginning but you should not be discouraged as long as you have all the factors above and a strong, well-developed personality to achieve your goals.
Google’s busy week continues with the rollout Wednesday of the latest version of its Chrome browser for iOS. The release comes a day after the Web giant opened its new Maps web interface to all users and also introduced an updated version of its Maps app for Apple’s iDevices.

The latest version of Chrome features tighter integration with other Google apps that you might have on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch – think Maps, YouTube, Drive, and Google+. So now, if, for example, you click on a Maps link in a search result, your Google Maps app will open instead of the Maps site within the browser, offering an altogether more user-friendly experience.

To enable this functionality, open Chrome and tap the tab to the right of the search box, scroll down and tap on settings. Next, select Google Apps from the list and then simply tap on the ones you want to enable. Currently, the four mentioned above are listed, with Google promising more soon.

Also, if you sign in to Chrome with your Google account when using the browser, you’ll now be able to sign in to your other Google apps with a single click.

Access to your full browser history via the menu, fullscreen browsing on the iPad and text-to-speech enhancements also come with the update.

In a post introducing the revamped mobile browser, Google software engineer Peter Lee also said that in the coming days the company would be rolling out an experimental data compression service enabling users to save bandwidth, load pages more quickly, and browse more securely on Apple devices.

If you don’t already have Chrome but are interested in giving it a whirl, you can grab it from the iTunes store here. Those of you already using it should receive an update prompt via the App Store on your device as usual.
Google rolled out its sizable update to Google Maps for Android last week. Unfortunately, iOS device owners were left behind. Well, iPhone and iPad owners, you can stop driving around aimlessly: Google Maps 2.0 for iOS is now available. It brings along a significant number of new features, but perhaps the biggest attraction here is the new optimization for the iPad. It’s the first time Google Maps has been made to work specifically on the big screen, making your routes clearer than ever.

The new iPad layout works wonderfully. The big screen works to its advantage with the amount of information that Google Maps can now convey. Street View looks better than ever on the iPad, with great shots of the surrounding area that are easy to move through with a tap. The functionality of Google Maps also seems to improve on the iPad, just because you don’t have to move in and out of different screens to access certain information – it’s placed right on the map that you’re already looking at. It’s one of those times where the whole “bigger is better” mantra turns out to be true.

That said, the iPhone version of Google Maps 2.0 is no slouch thanks to the plethora of additions thrown into the app. Most notable is the new live traffic updates that the app received. If there is ever a traffic jam in your way, a car accident, or construction work that could add time to your travels, Maps will now dynamically reroute you, throwing new directions up on the screen that will take you around the hassle rather than right into it. The real-time traffic updates make the app not just valuable for people traveling outside of a familiar area, but also to those that are making daily commutes and prefer to be on time.

If you’re not big on getting behind the wheel to do your traveling and instead opt for two wheels and a handlebar, Google Maps can still serve as a handy tool for you. About 330,000 miles of bike trails have been added for those that opt to pedal their way to a destination, and you can still benefit from voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation. Now, we can only hope Google adds a warning to bikers, encouraging them to finally start staying in their lanes and signaling their turns. Bikers, sometimes you scare the crap out of us.

No matter what means of transportation you choose, you can benefit from one of the other new features in Google Maps 2.0: The addition of Zagat scores and reviews. If you’re in a new place or just looking for something new to try in the city you live, Zagat reviews can point you in the right direction. Even better, you might be able to find some savings on the new place that you want to check out thanks to the inclusion of Google Offers, which will point out potential deals and savings for you.

All of the new features of Google Maps 2.0 are accessible through the new style of navigation, which will be familiar to users of the Google Search app. Cards seem to be the trend of Google’s in-app navigation, and it’s present here as well. You can tap on Explore in app and see places to eat, visit, and shop at among other things. These cards pop out and are easy to flip through with ease to get to the information you’re after. If you plan on using any Google app in the future, it’s probably best to get used to this style of presentation, which is fine by us because it works great.

If you weren’t already using Google Maps, be it because of the lack of iPad support or because you were still sure that Apple Maps would do the job just fine for you, then now is probably time to make the switch. Google Maps was already great and it really only gets better with version 2.0. The update adds in features that are handy not just in finding your destination but in getting there as well, and it rounds out the Google Maps app as the best option out there for mobile navigation.

You can download Google Maps for iOS for free from the iTunes App Store.
The meek don't appear to be in the lead in inheriting this earth in any way that says employment success. Reaching out, promoting, in short, selling yourself is as combative as ever in employment and those with the stomach and skill for it can come out ahead.

But making claims of greatness can be as fragile as a house of cards in the wind unless there is substance to back up your superlative declarations. You can't call yourself a star performer if there isn't some credible performance evidence to show in fact you can do the things you said you could do.

Knowing what counts as solid performance evidence in your field and being able to clearly cite examples of your achievement in these areas boosts your standing among those making hiring decisions. These deciders can be listening about your performance affirmations at a networking event or in an interview. They can be reading about them in your resume or on your LinkedIn profile. However they learn about those valuable accomplishments of yours that scream, "I'm qualified!", the better off your career can be.

So what really matters in the work you do? Is it meeting quotas, raising profits, mitigating threats, improving lifestyles, expanding market share, stopping hunger, bringing joy to others, elevating student test scores, saving lives, or any number of the important things that show you have done what you were hired to do? We all have a rather limited set of crucial outcomes or objectives to realize in our jobs. Knowing exactly what they are and keeping track of your attainment of these goals is a good place to start in identifying your performance evidence.

Examples of execution carry more weight when they are quantifiable. Numbers can take a statement from subjective to objective, from opinion to fact. But be strategic about the quantities you select in your power statements. Now let's say that I'm trying to prove to stakeholders that I am an excellent retail store manager. Do I talk about how demanding it is to track inventory, handle customers, and make good hourly-wage hires. That may all be true, but they don't speak to performance. Instead talk about numbers of units sold and employees supervised. Mention specifically how much you reduced operational costs and grew annual sales. Point out the increased percentages of surveyed customer satisfaction and improvements in associate training sessions.

If vetting a candidate, which would you rather hear or read about that person's accomplishments:

"Reduced expenses related to manufacturing operations."vs. "Reduced costs, inventories, and cycle times of manufacturing operations, resulting in 52%-68% gross margin increase, 4-10 annual inventory turn increase, and 25% cycle time decrease."

Or how about this:

"Managed operational and capital budgets." vs. "Furnished operational and capital budgets for 18 commercial properties, comprising over $30M in expenditures for over 3.5 million square feet of space."

Not all professions embed the collection of performance data into their jobs like sales, financials, and medicine among others. Sometimes it may be necessary for you to do your own logging, even if it's retrospective. Sure it's a hassle, but in less than an hour, and maybe with some help from those who know your work well, you can compile a generous list of quantitative achievements from your recent past. This information can then be presented as demonstrations of your good efforts and workplace worth.

Communicating in terms of performance evidence to hiring managers and recruiters strengthens your position as a job search candidate. So go ahead and announce with confidence your capabilities and potential, but reinforce the message with deeds that count.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Bill_Ryan.

By Karen Burns

You spend the better part of your day at work. You want to enjoy it. You want to love it.

But what if your current job is "just a job"? And what if, for one reason or another, you need to stay in that job for a while? Are you doomed to being miserable in the meantime?

The good news is -- nope! As Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young did not sing, if you can't have the job you love, love the job you have.

Here's how:
Get to know thyself.
Understanding what makes us happy is key to finding the work that makes us happy. Don't laugh -- a lot of people have never considered the causes and components of their own enjoyment.

For example, do you like to work in teams? Is human interaction important to you? Then if your job involves copious amounts of solitary time, you may not be happy at all. Your answer here is to identify the tasks that would be better done by groups, and why, and make a suggestion. Innovation, creativity -- bosses love it.

Specialize.

Every job involves parts we enjoy and parts we don't. You can enhance the enjoyment portion of your work by doing those things you do like more thoroughly and creatively (while, of course, continuing to slog through the bits you don't like).

Who knows? You may become so known for your "specialties" that your employer assigns you more of those fun (to you) tasks -- and, correspondingly, fewer of the less-fun tasks. You can fine-tune almost any job this way, and your boss may never even notice you're doing it.

Work harder.

This sounds counterintuitive. Why bust your chops at a job you don't particularly care for? Well, think about this: A lot of our happiness comes from a sense of accomplishment, of mastery. (This is true in life as well as at work.)

The better you are at your job, the greater your feeling of accomplishment. Being the ace, the go-to person, the "one who knows" can be tremendously satisfying and happy-making. Try it. It can't hurt.

Karen Burns is the author of The Amazing Adventures of Working Girl: Real-Life Career Advice You Can Actually Use.
Your time management skills as a student are put to a test during your time in college, but most especially if you have to work and study at the same time to support yourself and help pay for your education.
The combination of school work, school activities and a job is overwhelming and it will affect your productivity as a student, your personality and health when abused. If you plan to work part or full time while attending school you need to know how to balance your time and make it more productive. Choosing a job related to your college major is also to your advantage as it will add value to what you learn in class.

1. Look For a Suitable Job

Start looking for a job on campus or off campus. Many businesses located around colleges employ students on a part time and full time basis as long as it will not conflict with the school schedule. Opting for work near campus allows you to save up on transportation expenses and offers you flexibility so you can attend your classes and work on time. Look for a position that requires at least 15 to 20 hours of work in a week providing you with more time to study and socialize as well. Consider companies and positions that are related to your major. If you are taking up marketing, then a door to door, online or on site sales marketing position will be more appropriate as your working hours will be flexible.

2. Student -Friendly Employers

When you go job hunting prioritize companies that have been employing students through the years. These companies will have more consideration for working college students and assign you flexible hours each week whenever possible. This is essential as academic work loads will vary each week in every semester. Although you need to work to help pay for your education, you must not risk not being able to study or attend classes.

3. Organize Your Schedule

After you are hired for the job that suits your needs, you will have to get organized. A calendar or a planner will help you stick to a schedule and find time for everything you have to do. Mark your exam dates, project deadlines, study time, personal commitments, work schedule and other activities and refer to it whenever something new comes up. However, do not forget to allot time to have fun and be with your family and friends. This way you avoid spending too much time on one task and catching up whenever you fall behind.

4. Make Connections

Socialize as a student and as a co-worker because the people you meet and maintain good connections with will be invaluable. They can help you cope with the pressure at work and at school and you can help them too. When you take on a marketing job, students you befriend can refer your services and products to their families too.

Balancing work and school is not an easy task but it is necessary if you need the extra funds to help you through college. Nevertheless, opt for a job that will not require too much of your time and stress you out, as your priority must be your studies.
Think you hate your job? People tend to believe the grass is
always greener on the other side. Sometimes it is. If you are being
discriminated against, working in unsafe conditions, not paid as
promised, or otherwise treated poorly, then you should look for a new
job. Really, stop reading this article right now and start looking!
However,
if you are like the vast majority of American workers, you're just
checked out. Recent Gallup research shows that 70% of U.S. workers are
actively disengaged from their jobs. They're not inspired, not
proactive and they don't feel like their opinions matter.
This is a
serious issue from the perspective of businesses who are not getting
maximum performance from their employees, as well as the U.S. economy
that is not benefitting from that productivity. But it is also a serious
issue for the employees themselves.
When someone is disengaged at
work, they are actually hurting themselves as much as the company, if
not more. They can miss out on formal and informal education
opportunities, be passed over for new projects and assignments, and get
stuck in a skills and experience rut. People who are disengaged don't do
their best work or provide the best possible service, which is often
reflected in fewer raises or promotions. And they often don't
participate in events, meetings or social situations that would help
build strong connections within their company and industry.
One of
the ironies here is that over time disengaged employees actually
continue to get further and further behind their more engaged peers,
which makes it even harder for them to move on to a new position. It's a
vicious cycle. They're trapped in a role that they're not happy with,
aren't building the skills and connections that would help them move on,
and just become more and more sidelined as time goes on.
If you,
your friend, or your coworker is one of these 70% actively disengaged
workers, then there really are two choices. You can find another job
that you love, or you can find ways to love the job you have. While
there are likely to be aspects of your job that you have no power to
change, you do have the power to change your perspective. Whether you
decide to stay in your current job or seek a new one, there are steps
you can take to get the most out of where you are right now.
Here are a few tips on how to get more out of your current role:

Act happier and you will be.
Smile at someone or say hi to a coworker, even if you have to force it
the first few times. Pretend it's your uniform or you're playing a
character if you have to, just put on a positive attitude when you go to
work. Positive attracts positive. It sounds a little New Age, but
people do generally reflect back what they see. If you act happier and
more engaged, you're more likely to be offered the opportunities that
you are seeking.

Set goals and identify gaps.
If you don't know where you want to be, it's impossible to get there.
Take some time to identify where you want to go next, or in the next few
years. Talk to peers, mentors, coaches, anyone who can help give you
this kind of perspective. Once you know where you want to go, you can
see what gaps you need to fill to get there. Next, identify ways to fill
some of those gaps in your current job, or on your own outside of your
job. For example, if your next ideal role requires additional education,
investigate whether your current employer has a tuition reimbursement
policy. Or, if the skills you need to gain can only be learned on the
job, be the first to volunteer for the next relevant project.

Decide what you want to get out of it.
Every job has opportunities. The role you're in right now will be a
stepping-stone to whatever you do next, that's how careers are built.
While you may not be in your dream job right now, you'll have
opportunities to learn new things, gain more experience, or meet
influential people. Identify and take advantage of those opportunities
whenever you can. Decide what you can and want to get out of the role
you're in right now, and then purposefully focus on those areas.

The
interesting thing about all of these actions is that, while they'll
help you put things in place to move on to a new job, they'll also help
you be more engaged right now. That's crucial because it's hard to gain
what you need to move on to a new role without being engaged in your
current one.
Most people spend the majority of their waking hours
working. You might as well find ways to love the job you have, even if
you're looking for one you'll love more.
By Andy Boxall
Google added an offline viewing mode to its Android Maps app around this time last year, and the addition proved to be a popular one. To activate the feature, all you needed to do was select the offline option from the pull-up menu, define the area, and watch it download. It was very easy, and made traveling with your Android phone a convenient (and cheap) experience.

Now, Google has decided to remove the familiar offline mapping feature from its newly released version of the app, but don’t despair, it hasn’t disappeared entirely. Google has just confused everyone by changed the way it operates.

Here’s how you save maps for offline viewing in version 7 of Google Maps:
Open Maps: Open the Maps app, and go to the area you’d like to save for offline use.
Type OK Maps: Tap the search bar at the top of the screen and type, “OK maps.” If typing is a little low-tech, then if you tap the microphone, you can tell it, “OK maps,” instead.
Let the download begin: After tapping the search key, Maps will start downloading your selected location, and you’ll see an on-screen message saying it has cached the chosen area once it’s done. It seems you can drag the screen around, and zoom in and out to ensure Maps will continue caching until you get tired of it, or the phone runs out of storage space.
Info stored in a new area: Another key difference is the way Maps stores the cached information. Instead of appearing under the My Places menu, you just scroll back to the area and the information will be ready and waiting.

So, it’s not all bad news. Offline maps are still a part of Google Maps – they’re just a hidden feature. It’s not the only thing Google has removed either. The latest version says goodbye to Latitude check-ins, and the My Maps feature; however, My Maps will be back in the future. Should you feel these are an essential part of Google Maps, then we’d suggest turning off the auto-update and bypassing version 7. Also, if your Android phone doesn’t run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or later, then don’t worry, the app isn’t compatible with earlier versions of the OS, so no update will be forthcoming.

If you’ve discovered anything else about the way the offline caching feature works in Google Maps, feel free to share it with us in the comments.

Updated on 07/11/2013 at 10:00am by Andy: Google has performed a quick about turn regarding the offline mapping feature in Maps, and has added a “Make this map area available offline” option to its search card. The OK Maps option still works too, if for some reason you preferred that method.

So, finally, Nokia has stopped teasing its flagship Lumia 1020 and let us event goers get some long awaited hands-on time with the thing. It’s definitely not your run-of-the-mill Windows Phone, but is that camera-centric kookiness enough to make the Lumia 1020 worth that $299 price tag? The jury’s still out on that one, but so far the 1020 definitely seems like a Windows Phone worth your consideration.

First impressions aren’t actually everything, but the 1020 is quite a looker… even if Nokia seems to be having trouble making up its mind in terms of industrial design. The Verizon-exclusive Lumia 928 features hard corners and a gently-sloping back, while the 925 (arguably the nicer looking of the two) is the first to introduce metal trim. The 1020 on the other hand sticks very close to the original design language of the Lumia 800 and 900, and that’s frankly a very welcome choice. I’d go as far to say that Lumia’s original looks are nearly iconic, but your mileage is going to vary there.

As a counterpoint, our (much less geeky) intern Eliza vehemently disagrees with me — according to her, it’s much too angular and looks like a business card. To each their own, I guess. Admittedly, the camera pod does get in the way when you pick up the 1020 thanks to its prominent protuberance on the device’s back, but it doesn’t seem like a deal breaker.

Considering just how large the 1020′s camera pod is, I expected the 1020 to be much heavier. In fact, the device was almost startlingly light — Nokia’s fondness for polycarbonate remains untempered, though I suspect the matte finish they’ve used this time around will make the 1020 a little more prone to scuffs and dings.

As is always the case when playing with these sorts of things in the field, it’s hard to really get a feel for performance, but swiping through menus and firing up applications was just as smooth as any other top-tier Windows Phone. The only bit of slowdown I noted was while fiddling with some of the camera settings, but that may just be a pre-production software issue acting up. Nokia representatives confirmed that the Lumia 1020 runs a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm chipset (though the people I spoke to wouldn’t specify which one), along with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. That’s quite a strong spec sheet for a Windows Phone, though the fact that Windows Phone 8 is generally a very lag-free OS to begin with certainly factors into the equation.

And then of course, there’s the camera. Nokia wouldn’t spend almost an entire hour talking about a camera if it wasn’t worth its salt, but the 1020′s 41-megapixel sensor really seems to deliver… the keyword there being “seems”. As you’d expect, the 1020 is a very snappy shooter, and the images it captured appeared incredibly crisp and bright on screen (perhaps to the point of mild over-saturation, but that’s really nothing new for an AMOLED display). Since none of hardware here was final though, Nokia wouldn’t allow to us transfer our photos off the 1020 for further fiddling so it’s hard to say just how good the images look on different displays or on paper.

Despite the Pro Camera app’s name, it was awfully easy to pick up after a few moments of playing. Tapping the icon brings up a series of concentric semi-circles, and sliding up and down each of lets users adjust exposure, shutter speed, iso, and focus. It’s an awfully intuitive scheme that Nokia has cooked up, especially since you’re able to immediately see on-screen what sort of effect those changes will have on the image you take. Nokia has also included a tutorial mode to give first-time users a better idea of what settings can be tweaked and how the sliding control scheme works, a welcome touch for non-photographers looking to spice up their shots.

Is the Lumia 1020 going to be for everyone? Obviously not. Can it succeed in a very competitive marketplace? It’s far too early to answer that question, but based on my time playing with it, there’s nothing there that would necessarily disqualify it from success.

Earlier today, our own John Biggs took Nokia to task for using its resources to create a device that focused on “theatrics”. I honestly couldn’t disagree more — I’m honestly no great camera connoisseur, Nokia didn’t just slap a big honking camera on a crappy phone. The hardware seems well-crafted, the Windows Phone experience is incredibly smooth, and that longstanding app gap is finally starting to close (albeit slowly). I can’t pass judgment until I actually play with the final device, but so far it seems like that camera is just icing on a cake that’s already pretty damned delicious.
